If everyone put as much time and thought into their creative writing as he (?) does, it would be damn near impossible to pick a horse for this vast cryptic underground alliance to jockey.

Maybe we should make the next IC be "write a rambling paranoid conspiracy rant." I thing Scourge has proven how entertaining that would be.

I know a lot of you people don't bother to read Scourge because of all the venom and stupidity in his (?) previous posts, but this latest one is pure genius. Go have a look. Seriously. Am finally back, with internet on the weekends, and Gilmore Girls and Buffy on Tuesday nights. And we are in fact keeping our cable, becaues the mother decided she really liked it.

None of you probably cared about any of that, but, well, that hasn't stoped me from posting before. I do have one thing I'd like to say though about this week's IC.

I was torn between voting for Matt and voting for Raw. I thought Raw turned in a most excellent entry, but as I thought more about what the topic was, I thought that Matt did a better job of impersonating Mike. And because that was the challenenge, I voted for Mike. But I just wanted Raw to know that I thought she turned in a splindiferous entry.

Kim, your apology was appreciated, but not necessary. I never told you your comments were getting on my nerves, so how could you know? That's hardly your problem...it's my problem for not telling you sooner. However, I refuse to speak up simply for the benefit of those who wanted me to do something about you. I didn't want to play into their agenda, and I still will not. If my editorial yesterday had any coincidental effect that pleases them, it was really not my intention.

I still want everyone to say and do as they please. I just wanted everyone to know that my personal policy is to not censor anyone for doing so.

But, again, I do appreciate your apology. I know it was sincere, and I respect you a lot for that. I think a lot of people have a lot of misconceptions about — well, about pretty much everyone associated with this competition. However, I know that nothing is going to change that, so we just need to try and tolerate each other until this is all over. Then we can go back to not being involved in each others' lives just like it was before the game started.

Trust me, folks...we will all survive Survivor.

Up to this point, I've felt that not acknowledging all the artificial controversy was the smartest course of action. I still feel that way. However, I am going to address a couple key points, just so the contestants and the judges know that this game hasn't devolved into the joke some loudmouths in the gallery seem to believe it has.

First there's the issue of blogs, message boards, guestbooks, and mailing lists. It is the policy of the host to NEVER restrict free speech. To instruct anyone on how to conduct themselves publicly or privately simply because they are associated with Diaryland Survivor would be hypocritical. And it would be stupid. And, most of all, it would invite even more of the sort of allegations we've seen already.

To allow free speech is to allow free stupidity. Some readers and former contestants view themselves as staunch defenders of free speech. Their techniques are crude and damaging at best. But they believe in what they are doing, and to restrict them would be to oppose their right to have such idiotic opinions.

The view of the majority of readers is that ousted contestants should be banned from the blog. The purpose of that poll was to gather information for a possible future edition of Diaryland Survivor. To enact a change as big as that mid-game would be grossly unfair. And it would affect EVERYONE, not just the two particular players we all seem to be weary of.

It should also be noted that silence as to their behavior is not an implicit agreement of their statements. To accuse anyone of that is to be incredibly closed-minded and judgmental. I personally have found the actions of some of my online friends to be downright stomach-churning. But I have never condemned them because, quite frankly, what would be the point? Well, it seems to be the view of many critics that "the point" would be to placate those who oppose them. In my case (and in the case of MOST of the judges and contestants), choosing silence is an endorsement of neither side.

The second issue is one of judge integrity. As previously said, it is our belief that the opinions of the judges should not be restricted. The reliability of a judge is based on other things, such as voting record. And by that, I don't simply mean "do they vote every week?" I also mean, who do they vote for? If a judge is observed voting for the same contestant week after week, they are removed from the judges' pool. It would be very illuminating to many outsiders to see how the public statements of the judges seldom matter when it comes time to vote for Immunity. I can say with pride that all the current judges ARE impartial and fair. And they are opinionated and talented as well. They all deserve a lot more credit than they receive.

It is regrettable that a former contestant was driven to the point of locking her diary. I personally find that goes against everything this game stands for, and it flies right in the face of the free speech that some people claim to defend. But it is her personal choice, and she alone has the power to change her mind. Just as others have the power to stop flinging false accusations and tired insults. Those people should stop looking to others for action, and start taking it upon themselves to correct their behavior.

Ginger, I am gonna try to explain this as simply as possible, but since you teach web classes and things, you really shouldn't be having a hard time grasping it. The voices getting too much for you again?

1. The first IP address that you were using to sign guestbook was NOT a proxy. I repeat NOT A PROXY. We traced it to your ISP.
2. The first IP that Scourge and friends used matched YOUR first IP EXACTLY which I say again, WAS NOT A PROXY.
3. It was only later that Scourge and friends began to use a proxy to sign other guestbooks/attempt to hack into the message board. Apparently it was the same proxy that you pointed out in your denial posts. What a lovely coincedence! All those proxies out there and he just happened to pick yours! Wow!
4. Remember that first IP I talked about? If you don't read up a bit, I can wait. That little IP address was traced to wyrm.org.uk That address look familiar? No? How about http://www.wyrm.org.uk/ ? Ginger, the reason my last post didn't seem to be all about you is that it wasn't - I was also addressing the concerns of some other people in the things I was talking about.

You can't imagine how tickled I am to be called a hypocrite by you of all people. You have been caught red-handed trying to hack into/screw up someone else's website. Nobody believes your lilywhite denials. In previous DLS contests the anonymous cranks have had the good sense to fade away once they were outed, but you seem not to get the message - maybe you relish the humiliation too much.

A technical point though, it may not have been YOU precisely who did these things but it was done with your knowledge and/or approval unless a mysterious crazy person is sneaking into your house and using your computer. I haven't read enough of your journal to know what level of computer skills your boyfriend has.

As to the anonymous posters IP and FV being judges, that really isn't logical. Judges have no reason to hide their identities because nobody is going to vote them off if they get all uppity. It's kind of telling to note that the most vocal contestants are now ex-contestants while those who keep their own council (or just don't care) like Matt and Ms. M and Alternamommy are still in the running.

In particular that IP guy seems like the sort of person who needs to have his mommy log into his computer for him. Plainly not a judge.

I really don't understand your comment about "drones." I don't think I mentioned anything like that. You might be thinking of someone else.

This is responding to something written in the contestants' blog responding to something I wrote in the DLS comments page about "nettequette.' Yes, that was a tortuous sentence, but I am jet-lagged something fierce.

First of all, I don't much like the ring of the word "nettequette." It sounds dusty and Victorian, but I really have no idea what else to call the concept.

Second of all, I realized that my standards for sharing information were a little too strict - I think I may have gotten them from the online game I used to play - Planetarion. It's a game of paranoid military secrecy, where loose lips really can sink spaceships. Passing along random emails to the public is frowned upon, and it can get you in a lot of trouble. Communication in the "real" online world is much more fast and loose.

However, when people communicate online it really can't be denied that there is some sort of social contract involved, even if it is almost never spoken about. Sometimes people tell you things that you know you should keep under your hat, other stuff you can yell on the mountaintop, and there is a sizable gray area too.

Gingerbug yelled about me bringing the subject up, but later admitted that I had a point, at least partially. As far as I can remember in the whole Gingerbug Affair, the only communication of hers that was "leaked" was her email to the admin of the board in question, but it could be argued that to some degree she WANTED the details of the letter to be divulged. Did she expect the admin to say: "You guys are going to have to stop clipping bits from the diary of You-Know-Who but I can't tell you why?" I don't think so. She had a definite set of demands that she wanted the admin to act on and he couldn't very well do it in a total information blackout.

On the other hand we have Kinetix, who points everyone to the disclaimer in his diary that essentially says he is a Mynah Bird and that everything poured into his ears will come spouting out his mouth, irregardless of its effect on others or how it makes him look. If he wants to be defined that way, it's his choice, but he's recognizing that there is some sort of unspoken contract and he's saying he's ignoring it. Of course anyone reading his diary in the last week doesn't need to look at the disclaimer to figure that out.

Fair is fair though, Kim's like that too, with no disclaimer. Or maybe her diary name is a one-word disclaimer. Anyway, she repeats most of what she hears, but is cuter (i.e.: funnier) about it. It's called style ;)

Quithappy also seemed cranky about my post, but on a couple of occasions he's told Kim not to repeat things and she has anyway. Or maybe he was pulling my leg with his criticism and by telling Kim NOT to repeat what he said he knew he was cleverly insuring that she WOULD repeat it. Obviously I'm getting confused here.

And then there is Yelling-nad, the spreader of Good Cheer, but this post is long enough without getting into that.

Oh crapola. I just wrote a huge post here and it somehow got swallowed. The upshot: I did not bother to fight the battle on the Judge's e-list because I was doing it in real life with 40 students and I don't think that any of you care what I say anyhow. I think that in large part the list serves to show each other how ever so hip, cool, and breezy we all are. Groovy, even, to date me appropriately. Yelnad is certifiably nice; she was one of the few and the kind who paid attention to my mother. While Yelnad was certainly being quixotic in trying to fight a battle with this group of people, I don't know if she should have passed on the ugliness to Kinetix. It IS a stupid little contest as somebody said, but within the realm of it a lot of
fundamental truths about people emerge.

This is about why there are only 16 votes in the IC results, mine not being among them. I can only plead overwhelming life and sheer, absolute exhaustion, combined with a terrible commute home.

I made it to my computer at 9:02 pm. The polls, I believe, closed at 9. It wouldn't have made a difference, though. With my vote, Alternamommy would have had 8 instead of 7.

So. 9 pages of reading later and I still don't give a shit. While I agree with Jonny that this is a contest, I have to admit that I enjoy watching people get completely wrapped up in it and taking it personally (both the contestants and the judges). Then again, I'm the sort of person who watches CoPs and World's Worst Police Videos because I can't keep my eyes from observing how interesting humans are (especially ones in wife beaters or ones who use pet snakes as weapons). What a wacky bunch of animals humans seem to be. I'm including myself in this generalization as I know I'm an ape. I believe that all of the whining complaining bitching blabbing is all part of the game. Sure, I like the writing parts, too, but damn, part of the intrigue for me is seeing how people react when they are placed in the positions they put themselves in. PS. I am more than willing to co-host with Jonny next time if Meg needs to jet. I don't mind the smell of shit. Now excuse me as my hand is stuck in a jar because I refuse to let go of a shiny object. not sure why i'm up, but since i just spent more time reading kinetix's novel instead of writing my own, i figured i should comment. my first and overriding one is that people spend way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way too much time thinking about this stupid little game. and that's not just directed at kotex, but everyone else that puts this thing in any place of importance in their life.

secondly, this is not a fully sanctioned contest. this is not meg's business or even main priority, so she has no mandate to handle it any differently than it has been. i know how tough her job is, she tries to please everyone and wants everyone to be having a good time, and gets continually crapped on. it's kind of why i wanted her job. not because i like being crapped on, i just don't care that much if people like me.

and as far as voting - last challenge - i don't think july should've won either. i voted for raw. and five people agreed with me. but here's the thing. seven people didn't. and that's what this thing is, a little bit of luck in figuring out what different judges are going to like. we don't owe the contestants reasons on why we vote the way we do. just beause jen interpreted kinetix' entry the way she did doesn't mean she was a) wrong or that b) she even remotely owes him any explanation on how she voted simply because he received underhanded information that was never rightfully his to begin with.

i remember when i was playing and doing all the dirty things i did i still started every conversation with leroy, and matt with something other than the contest. i liked talking to them - in the grand scheme of things this was never more than a stupid little contest. and it still isn't.

the only thing i think is really uncalled for is compounding the info-leakage issue by posting wrongly acquired info in the journal. hey, look, it's gonna get a whole lot worse!

no matter. it's still just a stupid little contest. i'm glad at least 90% of the contestants/judges/readers can see that.

controversies are fun. i'm withholding full comments until there have been actual decisions and announcements. i do think it's funny when someone breaks the rules yet still tries to hide behind some form of righteous indignation.

So, anyways, I bought an Aztek, and yeah, it's the official survivor vehicle, so, I thought maybe I should donate it to the winner of the contest. Well, I thought that for all of 1 second, before I realized that I was paying for the damned thing and I'd kind of need it to drive myself around in. So, instead, I will offer to drive the winner of the contest around Vancouver for a day. They have to get to Vancouver somehow though. :D

Couple of quick things.

Didn't know there were all those popups from the discussion board. Nothing was popping up for me, but I don't know if that's because I created an account there. I'll look into ways of removing the popups, or going to another forum or just hosting something on one of my domains.

And mychai did want to be a judge a month or two ago, but, unfortunately he's gotten really busy again, and doesn't have the time needed to do it. However, he did check out the blog, and asked me to pass these words along "I got great humor in seeing that the judges were discussing all of my underwear/nekkid pics. boy meg is in a mood today, eh? so, in order to perpetuate the ass kicking, i will go grab some mud - k-lo and meg, you grab your suits, and we'll settle this the way female fights were meant to be settled.

and to add some serious judge matters, i'm going to tell you how i judge. 1. i don't even read the contestant entries until after the deadline. i don't want things to influence me, like how fast it was put up, or anything like that to play into my subconscious. i also read them randomly. i think reading them in the order provided isn't always fair - alternamommy is always first, that may make hers seem fresher, and then, by the time i get to raw, it might sap some energy. i think i may have suffered last time always being the last one read, that gives you a lot more expectations. but then again, i won, so i couldn't have suffered too much.

i'm going to be out of town on the 21st, can one of you guys watch my house?

So many good points have already been made regarding gingerbug's "lesson", but I really must add a couple things.

How many millions of people sit and watch Survivor on television every single week, then kick back on their sofa and trash the contestants? How many people watch the show for the specific reason that they like to talk crap about all the idiots and their stupid strategies and behaviors?

Can anyone honestly say they are above making negative statements about participants in the show this game is based on?

The "board" in constant question is NOT a part of Diary Survivor. It is an independent entity, and operates for the sole purpose of letting people talk senseless garbage about other people who make their lives public on the internet. It is no different from countless magazines, talk shows, radio programs, and tell-all books that exist for the sole purpose of talking senseless garbage about people who participate in "reality-based" television shows.

Trust me, people: if you were on the REAL Survivor, you would be forced to endure negative and hurtful comments far beyond anything jokingly said on this insignificant little bulletin board.

These are the things people need to consider when signing up for Survivor. They need to sit back and think about all the criticism they will have heaped upon them. And they need to familiarize themselves with the rules because Jeff isn't there in their camp 24-hours a day to remind them of those rules! The idea that we need to post the rules on every single page is ludicrous.

If you don't like what people are saying about you, don't go to those sites. And if you don't like the fact that people are saying bad things about you "out there somewhere" that you aren't aware of, THAT'S HOW THE GAME WORKS. It's a competition! The whole IDEA is for people to NOT LIKE YOU and try to VOTE YOU OUT.

One final thing (for the hundredth time): The judges play such an insignificant part in this game! We vote on one diary entry per week to give one person a 1:13 chance of not being voted off. That's it. If there was a way to make the judges obsolete, trust me, we would have done it already. But I guess everyone needs a scapegoat, and it's easier to blame the judges for your misfortunes than to blame the other contestants who have actually voted you off, or even blame yourself for not playing the game better. Fortunately, the judges are well aware of the fact that they are scapegoats. And that's why they like blowing off steam by talking senseless garbage. If and when you become a judge, you'll know what it's like. Remember, all the judges know what it's like on both sides of the game -- the contestants only know one half of the experience.

I'd like to respond to some of Gingerbug's comments:

You first comment suggests that guidelines are needed to get people aquainted with what is and is not considered appropriate under game rules: I think that it's pretty clear from the Diaryland Survivor rules/guidelines that anything goes. You can write about any damn thing your lil' heart desires... ranging from why you like to massage butterfly's velvety wings to a rant about the unfair abuse of abacuses in foriegn lands. If you want to apply it to an IC entry, go ahead... it's up to the judges to decide if they like it or not. One would hope that a contestant wouldn't take a topic about "Why kitties are cuddly" as an opportunity to talk about racial superiority. If that were the case, I can guarantee you that contestant wouldn't get a single IC vote. One would hope that the contestants would also take such comments as being inappropriate and give that contestant the ol' boot-a-gone. However, it's part of the game, just like on the show it's based on, Survivor. You can't predict how people act, which makes it all that more fun to watch and get addicted to. In my opinon, at least.

Your second comment suggests that once a contestant is booted off the faux island, that contestant should have all board rights revoked. Well, in my opinon, that would suck big sweaty balls. If that was the case in DS3, the contestant blog would have just been me and Jonny talking about why Snatch Magnets work best in water. Again, I think this is also pretty well implied in the guidelines... this contest is BASED on Survivor. This is not actually the real thing. If it were, you would all be dehydrated and wouldn't even be talking about swapping cookie recipes because you'd be too busy plotting each other's demise. And I don't know if this is made clear in the guidelines, but the winner isn't getting a million dollars. I don't even think you're getting $100. So, if we all understand that this isn't the real Survivor, then it should also be understood that not everything is going to be done and thought out like the real Survivor. I think this last paragraph came across as snippy on my part. For that I apologize, but I'm not going to edit as it's really how I feel.

Third comment: posting on an outside forum. I agree. It could imply that there is a possibility of bias behavior occuring. I should state that I am a member of the forum as well. However, I don't participate in the contestant bashing and only give real thought to threads that have to do with politics or writing pen pals in prison. I have enough brains to know that there's people out there that don't agree the way that I do concerning some of the contestants- just as those participating in the bashing of some worthy contestants know that not everyone agrees with them. If there's going to be a rule about judges/contestants/organizers not participating in outside forums, then there should also be a rule that no one can use IM for any sort of communication, as there's the possibility that bias behavior may occur. And also, lets not have any e-mails be exchanged between judges/contestants/ organizers because someone might say something that's considered biased. Well hell, while we're at it, let's just shut down this entire contest because a winner is chosen at the end and choosing one person out of 13 shows that the contest is biased.

I understand that the things that are being said about some of the contestants are hurtful. But sometimes, you just have to grow some thick skin and weather the storm. It'll pass. Just nail up your windows and bring in your favorite fern. If you can survive being kicked off the faux island and come out unscathed, it'll better prepare you for other faux things out there.

I'd like to repeat the last paragraph of the DS guidelines:this contest is for entertainment purposes only (just like those freaky psychic hotlines.) Please don't take it too personally if you are voted off. It doesn't mean that your diary isn't great. In fact, all of the diaries involved are amazing. If you think this contest will emotionally scar you in any way then please do not enter. I can't afford to pay for the therapy of both you and me. Just remember, it's only a game. "

It's only a game. It's up to you to weigh how much of it to take seriously. I recommend very little as it's just not worth the energy in the long run.

PS. We don't all believe what we hear. And we don't all believe that what's on television is real. Kind of like how we all think that this game isn't actually the real Survivor, but just a contest on the Internet that's not really a big deal.

PPS. Good idea on the suggestion for stream lining the DS site. Perhaps next year you could help out with the layout. But that's up to Meg Probst.

By the way, I'm one of the people posting on those boards, and I was the judge that cast the sole vote for Gingerbug's entry in the last Immunity Challenge voting. I thought the entry was rather sweet, but obviously nobody else agreed with me.

Ah, the Survivor buff. I, too, felt an irrational craving when I saw the commercial that runs after Survivor, but then I asked myself - what would I do with such a thing? If I were to wear it not only would I look like a moron, but one of the junior gangstas that infest my neighborhood would probably think I was wearing gang colors and pop a cap in my ass.

However, if it was a T-Shirt I would have ordered four. One can never have too many t-shirts.
